Private ground transfer from San Jose to Muelle Goeshen (3h30 min) pier OR private boat transfer from Tortuguero to Barra de Pacuare (2 hrs). The private ground transfer from San Jose will start at 5:30 am with a stop in Guapiles for breakfast. This option also involves a 40 min boat transfer from Muelle Goeshen to Barra de Pacuare. Your trekking specialized guide will travel with you from San Jose.
The private boat transfer will depart from Tortuguero at 8:00 am after breakfast at your Tortuguero hotel. Your trekking specialized guide will meet you at your hotel and will travel with you to Barra de Pacuare.
Arrival to Barra de Pacuare where Pacuare Reserve is located. Here, a Pacuare Reserve naturalist guide will meet you and you will start a 6 kms hike to the south section of the Reserve. Along the way, you will have the opportunity to watch sloths and howler monkeys and the guide will also explain you about the different researches the Reserve is conducting. Boat driver will take your belongings and will bring them to your hotel.
After this hike, time for lunch at Pacuare Reserve (included).
After lunch, your boat driver will be waiting for you to take you to Lirio Lodge, your home-base for tonight. Lirio Lodge is a charming lodge located in Barra de Pacuare, the most virgin sector of the Tortuguero canals, in the Caribbean of Costa Rica. It is located directly in front of the Madre de Di-os Lagoon, an extensive and unspoiled natural canal, surrounded by tropical rainforest, and separated from the sea by only a narrow peninsula of virgin and intact tropical jungle, the famous Pacuare Reserve.
Surrounded by three Sea Turtle conservation projects, a 2400 hectares of Biological Reserve and a labyrinth of rivers and swamps, Lirio Lodge offers an open-air dining pavilion and 10 bungalows with private bathroom, 110 volt LED illumination through photovoltaic panel all time.
Every visitor is invited to join Pacuare Reserve team during the turtle census and witness at close range the nesting process from February to May - an unforgettable experience for all who have seen it. After breakfast, take a 40 min boat ride on the canals to Muelle Goschen (Goschen Pier).
During boat transfer, you will have the opportunity to watch two of the most representative species of reptiles in the area: crocodiles and basiliscus. At Muelle Goschen you will start your way to Cimarrones. Car driver will take your belongings to your next hotel.
You will walk along a non-shaded little-visited gravel road with only occasional light traffic of cars or trucks. It may be quite dusty depending on the time of year. Both sides of the road are bordered by a very pleasant panorama of cattle farms, sugar cane and banana plantations, with mountains in the distance. And so you continue on to the town of 24 Millas, where you will find old Caribbean houses and small shops, like convenience stores and cafés, where snacks can be purchased.
You will pass by Río Hondo, and take advantage to get to know the history of the Atlantic railway. You will cross a railway bridge with room for pedestrians. Today, you will have lunch in a family home (included).
The last 500 meters of the trail to Cimarrones are along narrow railroad tracks and the guide should know the train schedule to avoid any problems. Once you reach route #32, which connects the Central Valley with the Caribbean coast, a car driver will pick you up and take you to Linda Vista put in (25 min) where the staff of Pacuare Ourdoors Center will be waiting for you for a short raft on Pacuare River (30 min) then climbing (800 mts) to your home base: Pacuare Outdoors Center.

The Pacuare Outdoors Center is nestled in the heart of the rainforest with views down the canyon and mountain ridge of the famous Pacuare River. The lodge features a main rancho where all guests take their meals. This rancho also serves as a meeting point where all guests share their experiences of the day before dinner. A glass of wine or a beer is offered by the lodge. There is no electricity.
All rooms boast a private bathroom with water heated by solar panels, a balcony, hammocks and screens to keep mosquitoes away from your room.

Spend a morning hiking to the nearby Cabecar Indigenous Tribe. This is an intense half day of trekking through the mountainous terrain across the river from the lodge. The small community of Tsiobata is a great experience to see how some of the most remote natives of Costa Rica live today.
The Cabecar indigenous live in numerous different villages in their reserve. Some are a five hour hike away. Tsiobata is a one hour hike from the lodge. In the village of Tsiobata, you will find a small one room school, eight different houses, and numerous thatch style homes which is traditional of the indigenous communities.

After a hearty Tico breakfast, it’s time to leave the lodge.
You begin your hike from Bajo Pacuare towards route #10 which is the main route that connects the towns of Siquirres and Turrialba. You will walk on a little-traveled gravel road. This is a very peaceful walk with beautiful views of the Pacuare River, passing various small communities along the way. In San Vicente de Pacayitas, you will stop for a rest and to have lunch. There are also local convenience stores if we need anything.
After lunch, you will be ready to continue to your next destination. The most suitable options could be: Turrialba, Sarapiqui, Puerto Viejo de Limon, San Jose or Arenal.
