Conservation and Rewilding Through Hospitality
Hacienda Montezuma sits in northern Costa Rica, between the Miravalles and Tenorio volcanoes.
It covers 1000 hectares of both primary and secondary forest. There’s no sign and no gatehouse. Just a winding road that fades into the forest and a sense that something timeless is waiting.
A Place to Reconnect
Floriana Acosta and her family reclaimed land once used by the United Fruit Company. They reshaped it into a working cattle ranch and conservation-focused sanctuary. Today, Brahman cattle roam alongside tapirs and pumas. Floriana, who leads the estate, calls it a place “to live a little slower, a little wiser, and a little more grounded.”
“Our hospitality is not just a service but reflection of our values, inviting guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of our surroundings while contributing to a shared vision of harmony and coexistence.”
That philosophy shapes every aspect of a stay.
Private Buyouts, Curated Days
Hacienda Montezuma is for small groups seeking both comfort and immersion. Each stay is a minimum of 3 nights, and all visits are full-property buyouts. Guests can choose the five-bedroom La Casona (for up to 10 guests) or the more intimate La Casita (1–6 guests).
Each includes a private chef and a suite of curated on-site experiences:
- Horseback riding with sabaneros
- Guided hikes through the cloud forest and dry forest
- Wildlife tracking with naturalists
- Paddleboarding and picnics beside the lake
- Fishing and forest-to-table lunches
Guests have exclusive access to their residence and the larger hacienda. It’s a beautiful place focused on conservation, calmness, and warm hospitality.
“We’ve hosted families, conservation donors, and writers. Everyone finds something different in this place,” says Floriana Acosta.
A Living Conservation Project
Each guest’s stay helps support long-term conservation efforts. Some areas serve as a corridor for sloths, monkeys, ocelots, and rescued wild cats from the Puma Rescue Center. Guests can check trap cameras, observe wildlife rehabilitation, or visit reforestation sites with guidance from ecologist Donald Varela.
Beyond the Property: Signature Offsite Activities
Advisors can enrich itineraries with off-site experiences such as:
- Tapir Tracking: Explore a private reserve with biologists in search of Baird’s Tapir
- Cacao Workshop: In Bijagua’s cacao district, learn the process from pod to chocolate
- Fly Fishing: Cast for rainbow bass along the Tenorio River at golden hour
- Rafting & Waterfalls: Float through the lush Rio Celeste valley or swim in volcanic-fed pools at Huella Verde
Sustainability and local insight shape every excursion.
