About Tenorio Volcano/Rio Celeste

Lying in the verdant North Pacific region of Costa Rica, the Tenorio & Miravalles Volcano area offers various enchanting hiking trails and adventure opportunities. Sitting between the regions of Guatuso and Upala de Alajuela the four volcanic peaks and the twin craters are surrounded by lush cloud forest abundant in fauna and slopes covered with savannah.
Located an estimated 50km from Liberia, surrounded by the verdant jungle and primary forest reserves, the Tenorio & Miravalles Volcano area offers pristine natural environment and breathtaking beauty. The volcanoes offer panoramic views of the San Carlos lowlands, Cano Negro National Reserve, Lake Nicaragua and the Lake Arenal. Secluded and fascinating, the area is off the beaten path yet the road system here is excellent. The mountain tops offer spring-like temperatures and weather remains humid the year round.

Tenorio National Park is best known for the beautiful Rio Celeste, whose light blue waters are caused by the emanation of sulfur and the precipitation of calcium carbonates.
Primary cloud forest and rainforest covers the park, which abounds with flora and fauna species in multiple life zones, innumerable rivers, waterfalls, thermal hot springs, and Laguna La Danta (Tapir Lake)
The Tenorio Volcano, with multiple craters, and Montezuma Volcano with twin craters, are both assumed to be dormant, with no eruptions in recent history.

This zone offers a good variety of lodges to choose from.

How To Get There:

Tenorio National Park can be reached by several routes. From San Jose, take the main highway to Ciudad Quesada (aka San Carlos), then to Upala. Turn left in Upala towards Bijagua, and follow the road approximately 30 miles to the entrance of the Park. Alternatively, from San Jose take the Interamerican Highway to Cañas. About 6 miles after Cañas is a turnoff to Bijagua. About 20 miles past Bijagua, you will find the entrance to the Park.
