As the second largest city, Alajuela is situated 20 km northwest of the capital San Jose in the gorgeous Central Valley. It has an important place in Costa Rica’s history, for its role in the independence from Spain and being home of the country’s national hero Juan Santamaria, a drummer boy, who sacrificed his life to save the country during the battle of the Hacienda Santa Rosa, in 1856. With a slightly warmer climate than San José, Alajuela is a pleasant escape from the hustle-and-bustle of Costa Rica's capital. It is a great cultural center and base for exploring the sights nearby such as the Poas Volcano, the small villages of Zarcero known for its well-manicured shrubs, Grecia famous for the hard-to-miss metal Catholic Church and Sarchi with its handcrafted oxcarts and all type of wooden handcrafts.
