The most important port of call for many of the major cruise liners.
Known as the ''Pearl of the Pacific'', its main city is also called Puntarenas. Located just two hours fifteen minutes away from San Jose, the city's accessibility is one of its main drawing points. Within just a few hours, you can land in San Jose and have already begun your travels here, along the scenic Pacific Coast.
Part of the city's cultural renaissance has been the inclusion of the newly developed Pacific marine Park, a likable stop of any Puntarenas Costa Rica sightseeing tour, with 28 separate tanks doing their best to recreate what lies below the surface of Costa Rica's Pacific coast. The most significant cultural landmark in the city is the museum which focuses on the region's historical relationship with the nearby ecosystems.
Being the country's most important fishing port, Puntarenas is the perfect place to enjoy fresh seafood, be it camarones al ajillo (shrimp scampi), pescado entero (a whole fried fish), or ceviche de corvina (bits of fresh fish marinate in lime juice with onions, peppers and spices).
