Tortuguero is one of Costa Rica's most popular eco-tourism destinations. It is the location of the most important nesting grounds in the Western Caribbean for the green sea turtle, which you will be able to observe between July and October. Tortugero National Park is a tropical sanctuary for 57 species of amphibians, 111 reptile species, 309 bird species and more to be discovered. The small village can be walked in five minutes from one side to the other as there is no car access. The only transportation system around are dugout canoes, some with motors attached and others with only paddles.
Tortuguero has a navigable network of lakes and canals that cross the National Park. The jungle life that you will explore while you ride through the natural and man made canals is simply amazing.
As you swoop through the twisting turns of the natural waterways, your naturalist guide can spot mud turtles, sloths, monkeys, snakes, caimans and dozens of colorful birds like toucans, parrots, herons and kingfishers. The dense rainforest is highlighted by brilliantly colored flowers and the jungle’s reflection in the mirror-smooth surface of water will double the visual impact.

How to get there:
From San Jose
Take the Highway #32 to Limon.
You will pass the Braulio Carrillo National Park and the Rainforest Aerial Tram. Continue driving through Guapiles, Siquirres and then Caño Blanco. There are no roads to Tortuguero, so you must take an exciting boat trip through the Tortuguero Canals. A hotel embarkation will pick you up either at Matina, Siquirres or Caño Blanco, depending on water level.
