Last November 6, 2007, Costa Rican Trails received the Certification for Sustainable Tourism.
This acknowledgement is granted by the Costa Rican Tourist Board. The main objective of the CST is to turn the concept of sustainability into something real, practical and necessary in the context of the country's tourist competitiveness.
The Program seeks to categorize and certify each tourism company according to the degree to which its operations comply to a model of sustainability.
The program evaluates the company in four main aspects, in the Physical-biological parameters which evaluates the interaction between the company and its surrounding natural habitat; the second aspect is Infrastructure and services, which evaluates the management policies and the operational systems within the company and its infrastructure; the third aspect evaluates the External clients, mainly in the interaction of the company with its clients in terms of how much it allows and invites the client to be an active contributor to the company's policies of sustainability; and the last one, the Socio-economic environment which evaluates the interaction of the company with the local communities and the population in general.
It is important to us, to have a balanced interaction, by having a proper stewardship of our natural and cultural resources; by improving the quality of life of the local communities; and by contributing to other programs of national development. Costa Rican Trails is committed to follow these aspects as part of its daily work and development.
