According to the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), Costa Rica is the country in America, that best protects the environment.
Environmental Performance Index (EPI) incorporates the results of extensive consultations and cooperation with subject-area specialists, statisticians, indicator experts, and policymakers across the world, made by scientists from Yale and Columbia Universities. They have designated Costa Rica as the country with the best environmental practices addressed to protect the environment.
The index evaluated 25 environmental indicators from 149 countries, which are established under six categories: environmental health, atmospheric pollution, water resources, habitat and biodiversity, productive natural resources and climatic changes.
Around the world, Switzerland was the number one country, followed by Sweden, Norway, Finland and Costa Rica.
The closest country in America, was Columbia, in the 9th place.
According to the press release, the countries in the first places in the EPI have invested in water and air pollution controls and other infrastructural environment elements. Besides, these countries have adopted public policy measurements to diminish the damages of economics’ activity”.
