ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN

This year, Costa Rican Trails and the Neotropica Foundation, will be working together to develop an environmental education program addressed to school children.

For this reason, Costa Rican Trails has chosen a primary school located in Brazil de Mora, Santa Ana, San José.
The main objective of the Project is to promote and contribute to the education of companies, in different fields, about what are sustainable environmental practices and how they can implement concrete actions inside the company and their community. As part of this objective, it supports formal education processes in primary and secondary schools.

This primary School faces many problems such as overpopulation, little access to their communities, hygienic problems due to deficiencies in the garbage collection system, and even lack of potable water in some part of the community. Also, this school has few recreational places, except for some parks and sports areas, which are not in good conditions.

The program will be developing environmental education activities at the Brazil de Mora Primary School in order to help little children to build values and attitudes to protect their environment.

As part of the main objectives are:

1. Create an environmental culture among students and strengthen their respect for the natural life.

2. Create consciousness in children regarding natural laws, such as the protection of the water resource, responsible management of solid waste, conservation of National Parks, etc.

Children will discover, reflect and build practical concepts about the environment, sustainable development and respect for life in all its forms. Through concrete actions children will help to preserve the areas around the Metropolitan area, where they live.

The program will be including approximately 120 children, in fourth and fifth grade and some of the activities that will be developed during the program are:

• 2 Induction and motivation sessions for the COSTA RICAN TRAILS employees.

• Monthly environmental and bio-laboratory sessions with the participation of COSTA RICAN TRAILS employees and the School children.

•Environmental education programs to educate parents, teachers and the general public, through the direct participation in related activities.

•Photographic record during the development of the Project.

•Media coverage.

• Trip to visit a National Park as part of the commitment with the environment and as a result for the children efforts.

• A follow-up report, each month, to inform us and the school board about the development and achievements of the program.

With these actions we are contributing to educate children and protect our environmental resources for future generations.
