Costa Rica is one of the world's greenest countries: literally and figuratively. This little republic has an incredibly diverse population of plant and animal species, and a huge percentage of its acres are devoted to protected habitat. So a holiday here is a cultural and educational exploration that will appeal to every animal lover, nature photographer and budding environmentalist in the family.

Day 01 Arrival / San Jose :
Arrival. Meet and greet at the international airport and transfer to Boungainvillea for your first night in Costa Rica. Breakfast included.

Day 02 San Jose - Sarapiqui :
After breakfast, your private driver-guide will pick you up at the hotel and provide a private transfer to the Sarapiqui Area. Before arriving to Sarapiqui, you will do a detour to the Poas Volcano National Park.

We begin our assent to the Poas National Park where you will feel a change in temperature and the lush vegetation becomes apparent, preparing us for the pleasures of the exuberant cloud forest of the Poas Volcano. On a clear day the view of the main crater is admired by all visitors, its diameter is considered one of the widest in the world.

You will continue towards the Sarapiqui area.

Sarapiqui is one of the most diverse regions in Costa Rica, offering a mosaic of mountains, plains, volcanoes, lakes, rivers, forests, fruit farms and cattle ranches. Marked by a quaint tropical flavor, the region is lush and enjoys a balmy temperature year round.

Evening free to relax in the pool or take advantage of the hiking trails.

Day 03 Shared Puerto Viejo River floating :
After breakfast, you will be picked up for your transfer to the Puerto Viejo river put-in where your floating tour will start. The Puerto Viejo River skirts important biological reserves that contain a large variety of animals and birds as well as flora and fauna. Ideal for the whole family and recommended for all ages.

Shared Night Tour (La Tirimbina)
Take a walk by the light of the moon and discover the wonders of the nighttime rainforest, when most wildlife species are active.

The Red-Eyed Tree Frog (Agalychnis callidryas) and Web-Footed Frog (Rana vaillanti), nocturnal species, are common discoveries on Night Walks.

During this 2-hour walk, you will learn about the natural history of different rainforest species, with a focus on nocturnal species such as: frogs, insects, spiders, sloths, kinkajous, porcupines, opossums, and others, revealing a completely different perspective of the rainforest. The Night Walk is offered from 7:30-9:30pm

Day 04 Sarapiqui - Arenal :
After breakfast, you will continue your itinerary to the region of La Fortuna where is located the Arenal Volcano. You will stop on the way to aprreciate hundreds of iguanas that love to take sun near the broder of the road.
One of the most active volcanoes of the world, cloud forests, a lake world-famous for windsurfing and an incredibly diverse population of wildlife is what you will find in this
area. The flawless silhouette of Arenal Volcano, its loud rumblings and frequent explosions of lava and ash are a sight not to be missed by any visitor to Costa Rica.
Arrival at mid-afternoon. Time to relax and appreciate the silouette of the Arenal Volcano at sunset.

Day 05 Shared Arenal Hanging Bridges Tour :
After breakfast, your guide will take you to the Arenal Hanging Bridges facilities. There,you will enjoy 15 bridges from 5 to 100 meters long, friendly design along 3 km
rain forest circuit of interpretive trails built with paving blocks to prevent slipping.
The bridges are build of aluminum, galvanized steel and concrete, to ensure maximum security for their visitors. They were designed by structural engineers with the most
demanding safety margins in the world.
Guided by a naturalist, who through the natural history will open for you the doors of a fascinating and colorful Tropical Rain Forest world. The imposing vistas of the Volcano from the hanging bridges over the forest, make a perfect combination for an unforgettable experience.

Day 06 Arenal - Monteverde :
After breakfast, a representative from Costa Rican Trails will provide a private van transfer to the damn of the Arenal Lake. There, you will cross the lake by boat. On the other side of the lake, a 4x4 will be waiting for you and take you to the Monteverde area.
Monteverde was founded about 40 years ago by a small group of conservation-minded Quakers who were looking for a peaceful place to live. Its cloud forest reserve is one of the most outstanding wild life sanctuaries in the tropics. This high elevation rain forest offers miles of trails with excellent opportunities for bird watching. The resplendent Quetzal is often sighted up here (mostly January to July). It is for this reason that more visitors are attracted to this private reserve than to any other in Costa Rica.
Afternoon hike to the Children Eternal Rainforest.
Children's Eternal Rain Forest of Costa Rica (Bosque Nuboso de Los Ninos), is in a transition zone from pre-mountain wet forest to pre-mountain moist forest. Because of its location on the Pacific slope, elevation and humidity, Bajo del Tigre is a very different habitat from other rain forest reserves in the area. Thirty of the tree species in Bajo del Tigre are among those in the area that have recently been identified as new to science.
As part of your experience at Jaguar Canyon, you will be sharing the home of the sloth,white-faced monkey, agouti, coatimundi, kinkajou, margays, porcupine, hog-nosed skunk, fox, coyote, armadillo, and bats, plus a world of insects, butterflies, spiders, reptiles,frogs, snakes, and great bird watching.
In the Children's Eternal Rain Forest (Bosque Nuboso Eterno de Los Ninos), which contains over 50.000 acres; the largest private reserve in Central America some organizations carry out various projects related to research, education, protection, habitat rehabilitation and volunteering. Its mission is to conserve, preserve and rehabilitate tropical ecosystems and their biodiversity.

Day 07 Shared Walkways, Butterfly Garden, Hummingbird Garden Tour :
These Tree Top Walkways are the best system of suspension bridges that exist in Costa Rica. The bridge system is located along a 1 .7 mile trail designed to be walked by people of all ages and consists of 8 suspension bridges going 90% through primary cloud forest. In the Insect Museum, you can observe more than 50 species of butterflies from different altitudes and climates on a guided tour. In the Hummingbird Garden the visitor can observe more than 14 species of hummingbirds surrounded by waterfalls and natural floral arrangements.

Day 08 Monteverde - Tamarindo :
After breakfast, you will be driven to Tamarindo beach.
Both nature and beach lovers will find plenty here to fill their days. Tamarindo is famous for its stunning beaches, its marine national park and wildlife refuge. This area encompasses beaches that attract one of the largest leatherback turtle populations in the world. Peak nesting seasons in the area are October through March. Due to its constant waves, it is also one of the favorite places for surfers.

Day 09 Tamarindo :

Day 10 Tamarindo - San Jose :
After lunch, a representative from Costa Rican Trails will provide a private transfer back to San Jose.

Transfer will be provided for your flight home.

What to Bring:


  • Clothing: Costa Rica is a very informal and casual country. Formal attire is only used in the city of San Jose and on very special occasions (Weddings, birthdays, anniversaries)
  • We recommend to bring a sweater for the highland areas, and light loose fitting shirts, pants or jeans, and shorts for the lowland areas.
  • For the beach areas please don't forget to bring a hat or cap, sunscreen, and sun glasses.
  • For the rainforest and the National Parks we recommend hiking boots, a small backpack, water bottle, pocket knife, flashlight, insect repellent, rainwear, and a pair of binoculars to observe animals.
