The second tallest volcano of Costa Rica, the Turrialba Volcano, located in the province of Cartago, released gases and ashes on Thursday, January 12th, 2012, so the National Emergency Commission (CNE) gave an early warning to the zone.
Workers from the Volcanologic and Seismologic Observatory (Ovsicori) detected several abnormal conditions in the volcano, like high temperatures in the ground between the craters and a flow of melted sulfur.
The emissions reach between 200 m and 300 m and are also carried by the wind to nearby zones like the cantons of Alvarado and Jimenez.
This volcano has shown action recently, with the last activity on January 2010, without causing any damage.
So far there aren’t any reports on strange smells or any event that may affect the villagers.
The Turrialba Volcano is a National Park that offers a wonderful scenery to appreciate volcanic activity in middle of exuberant vegetation, as well as neighboring volcanoes like the Poas, Irazu and Barva.
The National Park will remain closed until the volcanic activity stops completely, so the tourists are advised not to visit these areas.
